Fibre Optic cable installation is dangerous
not only because of where cable must sometimes be installed,
but there are dangers associated with working with the material
itself. This material should be treated with respect, and
extreme care should be taken when working with fibre optic
cable.
When sheathing or preparing
fibre: BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL
OF THE SHARP ARMOUR and the SHARP TOOLS! Make sure that
you do not touch the ends of the fibre to yourself or your
co-workers.
FIBRE OPTIC STRANDS ARE A BIOHAZARD:
The strands, at only 9 microns
thick, are much thinner than a human hair, and will enter
into your bloodstream through your skin before you are even
aware of it. Make sure that ALL fibre fragments are CAREFULLY
put away IMMEDIATELY into a "sharps" biohazard
container, and safely disposed of.
FIBRE OPTIC STRANDS ARE HARD TO
SEE: work on a dark coloured
workbench, or place a dark coloured rubber mat on your workbench,
so that you will be able to see ALL FIBRE FRAGMENTS. Then,
clean up and dispose of them SAFELY.
FIBRE OPTIC STRANDS CAN GET INTO
YOUR EYES: WEAR
SAFETY GOGGLES!!!!
FIBRE OPTIC STRANDS can easily be
ingested: DO NOT EAT OR DRINK NEAR
WHERE YOU ARE WORKING WITH FIBRE, AND ALWAYS BE SURE
TO WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE EATING!!!!!
FIBRE OPTIC Technology involves working
with eye hazards. NEVER, EVER look directly into the end
of a fibre optic cable, ESPECIALLY when lit.
OBEY THIS WARNING SIGN - DO NOT
LOOK INTO FIBRE:
Preparing fibre means working with chemicals including glues,
cleaning fluids, and strippers. Work in a well ventilated
area and use the safety equipment specified on the suppliers
material safety sheet.
FIBRE OPTIC EQUIPMENT CAN BE DANGEROUS:
Carefully read and follow
all instructions and guidelines that come with fibre optic
tools, materials and equipment.
