Module Three - Safety

During a cable system installation, installers will come into contact with hazardous environments. There may be underground and overhead construction, work on poles, and work within the walls of structures. Each type of environment has its own hazards, and great care must be taken to ensure that injury does not occur. Ensure that safety guidelines are followed, that all workers are trained and qualified for work which they are performing, and that all safety laws and regulations are properly followed. These regulations were created for your safety.

Check the Workers Compensation Board website for information regarding the specifics of the laws, and check with the Workers Compensation Board in your area to ensure that your worksite is safe, and that the safety rules and regulations are being followed.

As when performing work related to ALL of the modules in this series:

  • TAKE GREAT CARE when doing installations
  • PLAN AHEAD so that you have everything that you need to be safe
  • THINK CAREFULLY about what you're doing
  • DO NOT PERFORM WORK WHEN TIRED
  • TAKE YOUR TIME - Rushing can cause accidents.
WCB Rule: Safety headgear must be worn by a worker in any work area where there is a danger of head requirement injury from falling, flying or thrown objects, or other harmful contacts.
WCB Rule: Fall protection systems must be used when work is being done at a place from which a fall of 3 m (10 ft) or more may occur. It is strongly suggested that the section on fall protection be read before proceeding with any work.
Working with wiring, and in and around buildings and towers requires specific electrical and trade tickets. Ensure that every person working on installations (rural, remote, or otherwise) has the proper qualifications for the work which they are performing.
ALWAYS CARRY AN INDUSTRIAL FIRST AID KIT in case of injury.
ALWAYS USE THE CORRECT TOOLS and equipment to avoid injury.

ALWAYS wear appropriate safety equipment:

Steel toed boots
Safety Vest - good visibility for others to see you.
Hard hat
Gloves
Goggles or safety glasses where required
Climbing Safety: Use of the proper gear to prevent a fall is required, including harness and ropes, as well as protective gear such as a safety helmet. Additionally, a spotter is required to ensure that climbers do not fall. More information on climbing safety regulations are available on the WCB website.
Lastly, again be aware that the authors of these modules are not liable for any injury, harm, or damage – for more information, please read the main safety page.
