Module Four - Purpose

The purpose of this module is to explain fibre optic technology, including its advantages and disadvantages as a technology for bringing Broadband Internet to rural and remote communities.

This module explains how the technology works, focuses on which types of fibre optic materials work best in a rural and remote setting, and explains not only how to work with this technology in that setting, but how to appropriately choose whether to work with the technology or not.

There may be cases where a community chooses fibre optic technology, however completes only the preparation portion of the work. They can then make better use of their budget by bringing in a fibre optic technology professional only when necessary to complete the finishing portion of the project. In many cases, this may be a cost-effective method for using this technology.

This module does not cover software issues or software setup of devices, however communities which decide to use this technology will need to become familiar with specific software issues associated with this technology, (for example subnet routing), or will need to be aware that someone will need to address software issues in order for their system to work correctly.
