Module Two - Purpose

This module describes how to build the infrastructure for installing a wireless network in a community or organization. It will explain the fundamentals of designing a wireless network so that appropriate equipment can be chosen depending upon the network design parameters, and will provide outlines of equipment types and uses.

The activites section provides instructions on how to safely build several different tower types and mount antennas, and explains what is required to adequately bullet-proof, idiot-proof, and weather-proof the wireless installation.

Upon completion of this module, it should be clear what wireless networking is, how it works, and how to choose appropriate hardware in order to create a sound hardware infrastructure for a wireless network. This includes building temporary and semi-permanent towers, installing several different types of antennas, and how to power and weatherproof the system so that the network will function well into the future.

This module does not deal with software networking issues. Because software and network configuration details are not covered in these modules, user manuals for equipment purchased will be required for final setup of installed LANs.

Wireless networking sometimes takes place in hazardous locations - on mountain tops, rooftops, hanging off of buildings, or working inside building envelopes, or in crawl spaces. It must be emphasized that taking the utmost care is required to ensure SAFETY of those doing the installation, and the safety of everyone else who may come into contact with the installation when complete. Installers must be knowledgeable about and properly qualified for the work which they perform, as well as extremely careful, in order to prevent personal injury, property damage, or death. Please read the safety section for more details.
