This module deals with unshielded "twisted
pair" cable, in particular, Category 5, or CAT 5 cable, which
is specialized for transmission of data. CAT 5 ethernet cable is
capable of 100mbps (One hundred megabits per second) data transfer,
each cable consisting of 8 wires, or four twisted pairs. The standard for CAT5
cable uses 4 twists per inch which minimizes data loss. Ethernet networks are generally
used for networking computers within a small working radius, as
there is a limitation to the distance that data can be transmitted over copper UTP. The accepted standard is to
not exceed 100 metres before adding another device. More
details on technical specifics are found in the Activities
section.
As this module is focused on the physical installation
of local area networks in one building or in buildings
in close proximity to each other, the instructions and activities are focused
*within
the walls* or building envelope of one building. This module does
not deal with "backbone" hookup. If "backbone"
hookup is the subject you're interested in, check out the second,
third, and fourth modules.
As building envelopes including walls, ceilings,
and crawl-spaces where electrical wiring, plumbing,
gas lines, lighting, and even sound systems are installed,
the utmost SAFETY
is required. Installers must be properly qualified and use
extreme care to prevent personal injury or property damage.
Please
read the safety section for more details.
As software and configuration details are
not covered in these modules, user manuals for equipment purchased
will be required for final setup of installed LANs.
